JOE SHLICHTA
ARTIST STATEMENT
Some time ago, I gave up painting with a plan, trying to make the finished piece arrive at some idea or vision I had in the beginning. Those pieces never seemed to work for me. The ones that did were invariably those that I had let myself aimlessly wander, without any plan or goal. So now I just keep working on them, letting them evolve and show me the direction they want to go. So I can’t really say I fully understand the process. Nor do I feel that I ever really want to, because I suspect that to fully analyze and explain how these paintings are created would be to take away much of the mystery and magic.
Perhaps Cormac McCarthy said it best:
“Even in this world more things exist without our knowledge than with it and the order in creation which you see is that which you have put there, like a string in a maze, so that you shall not lose your way. For existence has its own order and that no man’s mind can compass, that mind itself being a fact among others
