Gary Komarin of Flanders, NJ, has studied with master abstract expressionist painter Phillip Guston at Boston University, also where he earned an MFA in painting and served as a Graduate Teaching Fellow. He is the recipient of major awards including the prestigious Joan Mitchell Prize in Painting, Edward Albee Foundation Fellowship, and Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts grant. His work has been acquired for the collections of AT&T, Microsoft, Continental Airlines, McDonalds Corporation, and Prudential Insurance Company of America. In 1996, he was teamed with his influential mentor in the highly successful exhibition entitled "Traylor, Guston, Basquiat, Komarin" at the John McEnroe Gallery in New York City. Last year, the New York Times wrote: "(s)eemingly imprecise in their imagery, austere in palette, self-absorbed in feeling, their surfaces gritty and uningratiating, Komarin's paintings can nevertheless become eloquent....the forms resonate when they are at once strange and familiar".
