kim kopp bio
bio   statement
Kopp’s work is multilayered, embracing the disciplines of painting, drawing and printmaking. Combining materials and techniques, she layers, covers over and scrapes back graphite, pigment, acrylic, gold and copper leaf and wax with bits of technical drawing, and lyrically placed corrector tape. Some of the paintings are in a single nuanced shade of black graphite. Fragments of her training as a boatbuilder show up in the forms and visual language which is carried throughout the body of work; seed-shaped vessels, like boats viewed from above. While each painting is complete within its boundaries it also functions as part of a larger whole in the way letters link up to form words, phrases and sentences or days that add up to create weeks, months and years.

Kopp received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, and her MFA from the University of Chicago where she was a Full Merit Scholar. In 1994 she received her certificate from the Northwest School of Boatbuilding in Port Townsend WA.
